FAQs

What age can my child start this?

We recommend starting the program with kindergarten aged children, as they are at an appropriate stage of brain development to greatly benefit from the gross motor exercises.

Who can benefit from this program?

All school aged children can benefit from the fine motor work and focus building. The program can be used by those who are looking to improve fine motor dexterity, such as those recovering from strokes and other brain injuries. Individuals who struggle with emotional regulation (ie ADD/ADHD, autism, certain mood disorders) can use the program to help with balancing emotions.

Do the music tracks correspond with certain exercises?

You can use the same track repeatedly if you would prefer. We include a variety tracks because each individual has different preferences.

How long before I will see improvements?

That depends on the extent of your child's problems and the willingness to carry out the practice. Some see changes within weeks, while some begin to see changes in a few months. Consistency is important, and ideally the child will use the program daily. The exercises take approximately 15 minutes a day.

Is the music necessary? Will I see results with only the writing exercises?

Adding therapeutic music transforms the handwriting process, changing it from an intense, frustrating cognitive process to a non-threatening cognitive format that stimulates the brain. This removes stress and anxiety generated in trying to meet expectations from the process. The brain benefits from the regulated stimulation gained by simply doing it. Therapeutic music has the capacity to entrain the brain's rhythm. The brain is pulled along by the music's rhythm which stabilizes how the brain is firing, calming the brain and enhancing the learning process.

What is the connection between handwriting and impulse control?

As an intentional movement, handwriting's impulses are the essence of the emotional life force. Handwriting is "brainwriting”, akin to a legible EEG. It is the most basic of the 3Rs (reading, writing, arithmetic), and the unrecognized foundation for developing the other 2Rs. As the process integrates the specialized powers of the hemispheres, it enables one to be able to direct the emotional energy so being functionally productive, i.e., goal directed, is possible.
