I have been a parent representative for a few years and have sat in on several CSE meetings. I'd say 80% of the time the school personnel and psychologist mention the child being ADD/ADHD. They don't look at what is behind the behavior. They automatically think because the child can't pay attention that it must be ADD. In one situation the child's performance proved he was not understanding the work and needed a different method of instruction. The teachers didn't realize this. Thankfully the child got the appropriate instruction and is doing wonderfully. School personnel have to stop going for the quick fix and evaluate more the environment and method of instruction.

Change the classroom to fit the children. If children are not learning the old "left brain" way maybe there's a good reason for it. Maybe society in the their future will need their brains to function in this new way. Perhaps they are here to change the old structures because they do not work anymore. The world needs social change. Plenty of "left brained" people are in power now and look at the state of the world. My ADHD-labeled son never watches TV or plays video games. He is incredibly curious and learns most things he's interested in on his own because he is driven to. If only schools could harness this drive and build on it. Change the schools. Do not retro-fit the child.

I really enjoyed the information that was shared on this web page, but i still have a few questions that i need answered. If you could please help me i would really appreciate it. My question is: I have this child in my summer school class, he is given ritalin in the morning approx.8:00 am and then he takes it again at 12:00pm. In the morning we are able to get him to function and preform the way a student should then around 12:30 when the second dosage kicks in my assistant and I have the worst time controlling him. He has become a hurtful to himself and others in the classroom. If you could please give me some ideas to what we could to to curtail the disruptive be- havior i would really appreciate it? Thank you so very much.

I have a 5 year old son who has an impulsive behavioral problem. He has not been labled with ADHD but is showing signs. I have been taking him to a neurologist who says his behavior is not consistent enough to label as ADHD. In the meantime I have had to switch babysiter and Iam at my wits end trying to find a solution. Iam a single parent who is doing all that 1 person can do. Any suggestions??

Informing parents, and raising questions, on the validity of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder-ADHD. Dear Jeanette. My son has been diagnosed with ADHD since he was in the second grade. He is now in the eigth grade and is failing. I just got home from his IEP appointment that has taken me 4 years to get a school to do, and I am at a loss of what to do for my son. He has a very large learning problem and they have decided he should be in specail education for the remainder of his academic career. I agree with them on this. But I do however have a problem I could use your advice about. I would like some information on support groups for kids with this problem. My husband doesn't understand it at all and thinks I am just making excuses for my son. Please help me. Sincerely, Tammy Motyl

I was delighted to learn about your approach to writing. As a Montessori teacher and administrator for 30 years I have seen a steady decline in the readiness of children learning to read and write. I am ordering your program right now! Thank you for your years of research and your effort to produce a systematized program to meet the needs of the children of today.

Hi I am an elementary school counsellor in the Caribbean. I have been working with several pupils with ADD and ADHD. Not all of them are on medication and to be honest I cannot say that I really see much difference in their behaviour. They are at varying degrees of academic achievement, and represent the spectrum of societal class. It is refreshing to see that there is not only research showing the possibilities of alternatives to medication, but there is also something practical that can be tried. I have several manuals and programmes designed to address ADHD with the ppupils but I find it frustrating as the condition does not really permit these kids to transfer what they have read or discussed in their sessions. MAybe this is worth a try. Donna

Hi, I m a 67 year grandmother of 3 ADD grandchildren, 2 were on Ritilin in grads school, the one boy was in a daze all the time, the other boy was able to maintain, the 3rd a girl was not on it and is still very hyper.she is 18 and only a sophmore in school. I also work at an elementary school with 17 ADD 1st graders and some are on the med and some need to be. It is very hard to keep them on task but by working one on one seems to be the best solution .From the beginning of school till now , the one I spend the most time with has made quite a change. At 1st we couldn't keep his attention and he ran around the room, now he sits , studies and will ask for help. I hate to see anyone put on medication if there is another way to over come the problem I have also homeschool An Add boy through 8 and 9 grade English. he plans to take summer school and will graduate ahead of his classsmates so presistance& patience paid off People need to spend time with the kids and not rush into the medcine scene Some teacher want the kids put on medication because they don't want the distubance I plan to tutor a 7th grade child this summer I read the ad in the paper so don't know the cicumstances, but it said needed help in all subjects So it will be a challenge , but if I can make a change in one person's life then that is good Virginia

I am against medicating our children instead of finding other alternative ways of handling these types of situations. Thank you!!

I really want to thank you for your wonderful program. My son at 7 was having difficulty tieing his shoes, writing etc. He is homeschooled, and while not ADD, very "bright and bouncy!" We have been doing your exercises for two weeks and the effects are fantastic. He can tie his shoes and he writes in his journal every day. He also LOVES the exercises! His 18 year old brother still has illegible handwriting even though he has a 160 IQ. I would have loved to have had your program ten years ago for him. THANK YOU!

I am a student in the Teacher Ed program at Bates College. I was diagnosed ADHD in 2nd grade but didn't start taking Ritalin until 5th grade when my behavior became really untenable. For the first few months I didn't notice a thing and yet I was getting stright A's and all the teachers loved me. We were all saying Ritalin was my savior and all that. But in 6th grade I started to realize that Ritalin was completely changing my personality. I stopped growing, lost all apetitite, couldn't sleep and developed a sort of social phobia. I demanded, and my parents and teachers eventually agreed, that I stop taking Ritalin. It was really hard at fist but I learned to control myself and ended up basically outgrowing it completely. Now I'm gettinggreat grade at the numbr 18 libral arts college in the nation. I still bounce my leg when I'm sitting and tap my pencil, but that certainly doesn't qualify me for a disability. I am now preparing to become a teacher, and I think the medical approach is seriously flawed. I am determined not to label my students the way I was labeled. The ADHD-Ritalin-Industrial Complex must be stopped. I've never heard of handwriting therapy, but we need as many natural alternative as we can get!

What a suprise, I was looking for writing curriculm plans when this site came up. My 8yr old was diagnosed as having social ADD, he can contain himself in a class room setting as strict boundaries are in place, though this is not the case all the time. It is at home we have the problems, the constant attacking of his brother or other children visiting my house, the inability to sit at any one task for more than 5 minutes and the general pace of life with a child of this nature. Have only considered drugs when I reach the point of boiling about every 2-3 months. But once over this I come back to my senses. Putting such young children on drugs of this nature can do them no good. I feel they need to try to develop strategies in their own minds as to how to control/regulate themselves. Drugs just mask their difficulties not help them understand.

I feel that doctors should look at the child much more carefully before they decide to perscribe the medicine to the children. I know first hand what this "helping" drug does to people. I don't think that any child can ever be put on it. It is very eaasy to get addicted to it and it is wrong to give it to your child, you may think that it helps but in the long run it will only hurt the child.

My husband Carl and I are Grandparents of a beautiful five year old Granddaughter named Emily Rose whose parents, our Son David and his Wife Katrina, have decided she is too active. Our whole family sees her as a very normal child. She is not overactive for a five year old. We all feels she is very normal. I have a lazy daughter-in-law who likes to sleep in, in the morning and our Granddaughter just put a crimp in this. We are frustrated because they want to put her on Ritalin. We are scared to death of all the side effects. I am researching everything I can fine on the drug and alternative methods of working with Emily. She is in kindergarten and her teacher says she is not able to learn and that she feels Emily should be tested for ADD. We all find it curious that she can learn songs, poems, games and other things that interest her. We all feel the teacher just wants to be her on some medication and put her in a corner so she is not a distraction. As you can tell I do not agree with this teacher or our daughter-in-law. My son is easily led by her. I would like to purchase your book. Could you help me to find it please. I went to some book stores here in Sacramento, California but they do not carry it. Please help us. Worried and stressed out Grandparents, Carl and Susanne Pellicano. You can write us at P.O. Box 541, Broderick, California 95605-0541, or as I stated before, E-Mail me at pellicano@Xcom. Thank you very much for your research and caring about children as you do!

Oh, there's too much to type at one sitting!!! I just came from my son's class, where the teacher recommended me considering music for his attention needs. I have been steering away from drugs, but behavior techniques only work temporarily for him. I logged on, and, through "CHADD" I ended up here. Oddly, writing happens to be frustrating for my son, so I'm going to present what I've found to his teacher, and hopefully, after an "OK" for the purchase from his school, your program will begin to close the gap for what I, and I EMPHASIZE the I, feel is the developmentally SOUND way to go. ( ALL puns intended!) I hope to report/confirm the good news in the near future. Sincerely, Debbie Greene

I was led to this website from a handwriting analysis colleague of yours. I was given an insightful psychological profile of my 9 yr old son from a 'scribble' handwriting sample. I'm amazed by the depth of information I was given in areas of motivation, personality type, mother-father relationships, learning styles, etc. What I'm not clear on is how to remediate some of the issues of lack of impulse control, low frustration, easily angered, etc. I'm fascinated with the concept of your program yet would like to know more before ordering. I'm also an OT (currently at-home-mom of 4) who could implement the program with others as well. Could I read some testimonials from OTs? Thanks...looks great!!!

I am interested in handwriting analysis and the brain research, but I am concerned that the emphasis of your Website is to treat all children with ADD and ADHD with multisensory handwriting. Although I feel that handwriting is a necessary and often neglected part of our children's education, I feel that this approach cannot be a "cure" for ADD and ADHD. I do applaud your research and I would like to know more about the handwriting and brain research.

My son was diagnosed 5 yrs ago with ADHD, he is now 10. I tried diet and behavior mod and nothing worked for long. He has been on Adderall for the past 3 yrs. He also takes Chlonadine to help sleep. I hate him being on meds but nothing seems to have long term benefits. He does well academically but is a behavior problem at school and home. He is hyper, distracted and impulsive. He is VERY easily frustrated to the point of lashing out, but just at home. I hope your product helps. I have read books, been to counseling, tried meds, and diets but still have ended up in the same place! He is articulate and very bright with a great sense of humor and is very artistic. If this product works and I can get him off the meds, I will tell the world!! Thanks.

I have read the Mythe of ADHD and we are still in search of the correct answer to treat this child. I'm forwarding this website to my daughter so she can be as informed as possible with so much literature and not enough direction for this condition. Thank you for this website.

My 8 year old son was recently dignosed with HTD, And his counsler had suggested to put him on medication. He has a hard time at school, staying foucsed with anything. When I give him more then one thing to do, he can't remember what I had said to him. He is always moving, always on the go. Even while he is sleeping he tosses and turns. I've tried differant things, but nothing seems to work. I also just found out that my 10 year old son has Asperger Syndrome. Needless to say my two boys do not get along. If you have any suggestion, Please e mail me. Thank You

Dear Jeanette, I was very interested when discovering your web site, as I have just begun research on ADD, or ADHD. My child is 6 years old, and very active. Her teacher(s) have made comments on her inability to focus within the classroom. I have not yet had my child tested for ADD/ADHD, although, I am concerned about her academics, primarily in her reading skills. Her current teacher is experienced in this area, as her child was also diagnosed with ADHD. We are currently monitoring her diet and sleep patterns, and as well working closely with her on learning how to focus, as her teacher also is within the classroom. Medications are not considerated as an option, therefore, I would really appreciate some further information on your writing and music program. Thank you!

i tried to email you before and you said you couldn't read it. I thought I would try again and see if it worked. My daughter is 8 years old and is having alot of difficulties in school. She was diagnosed with ADD April of this year. We tried a few things like diet and herbal supplements which we didn't see any changes and we are in the process of going through neurofeedback therapy and we've seen some improvements but not as much as we'd hoped. I would like some more information about your program before I purchase it but it sounds very interesting. Thank You!!

Dear Jeanette, We have a daughter who is now 8 years old, but was diagnosed with ADD about a year ago. We has been very hard for us to know what decisions to make and are they right for our daughter. My husband and I at this stage have chosen not to put our daughter on any medication. We want to try every avenue possible and medication would be the most absolute last resort. We have had our daughter go through neurofeedback therapy since April of this year. It has helped to some degree but we were hoping for a little more progress than what we've seen. I happened to stumble onto your website and find it very interesting. We are very interested in learning more about your program before we purchase it. Is there anything you could send us to explain more in detail how your program works. Please email me back to let me know. Thanks!!!

I have two boys ages 8 and 3. I started homeschooling Ben when he was six months into first grade at a private school. Ben had attended this school now for two years in their Jr. K and K programs. He had diff. times with fine motor skills from the start. Language first then handwriting. He was at first a right handed child. He would change hands day to day. He could write well in the right hand. In fact his Jr. K teacher always commited on his hand writing. Then some where in the K level Ben went to the left hand for the most part. This was also the time he rec. his play station? Any connection? Anyways since then he has been struggling with all. He has a profile of visual and auditiory processing problems. Developmental Dyspraxia, Scotopic Sensitivity Snydrome, Dyslexic, Sensory Intergration problems and non verbal learning disorders??????? Although I struglle with myself on a regular basis. Am I doing what is best for my child? As a result I have become a research addict. Ben at 5 1/2 started with piano lessons. I was the frustrated parent with not much success with speech therapy. That he had been going to since the age of 3. Someone once said to me sometimes you have to climb the moutain from the otherside. She meant another fine motor skill. I came up with piano for Ben. For one reason only. Bee was so gentle when on a piano. He was so consumed with playing one finger at a time. No pounding of the key boards with this child. Speech incidently improved two fold. Relatives understood Ben for the first time in his little life. With just two months of piano, once a week. Well music made leeps and bounds with his speech. I can only hope for the same with your program. Sincerely, Leslie Hamud - Mom/Teacher/Lover of Life

I ran across this website as I researched add. I am very interested in this program but would love to speak to someone who has used it or is currently using it. I am a homeschooling mother of 4 and have taught 1st and 2nd grade for several years and have experienced children with ADD and ADHD. My daughter struggled in public school since 1st grade through 4th when she was diagnosed with ADD. We chose not to medicate and work with her. she is still having some problems but has learned to live with them. My 8 year old son on the other hand is struggling here at home with me. This has been the most difficult year for me. I knew he would have problems in school so I choose to homeschool him from the beginning. He is very bright. When he was only 2 he new everybody's birthday and ages in our family and even my sister's. at 4 he memorized all the states and capitals through song and all the books of the bible and many bible scriptures easily. Now he can't seem to remember anything. Everything is frustrating including writing He has forgotten all the multiplication facts that he new since he was 6 and I find myself struggling with him. Sorry I didn't mean to make this so long just wanted to know if you have tried out the program and if you like it. Please let me know. Money is tight and it is difficult to make a decision. My youngest is also showing the same ADD tendencies so I want to get to her soon. Thanks so God Bless Rebecca

He is not hyperactive but only unable to stay focused for any amount of time. I feel like I am failing my child. I want so much for him to be happy and I am hoping your product will send us there. Hello, I was thrilled to read some of your comments steering the thiking away from ADD/ADHD as a disorder, and that there really are things to be done in lieu of/in addition to medication. Ritalin, it seems is the "magic bullet" many well-meaning teachers suggest to parents as a means of controlling many children--children who otherwise would be labeled intelligent, enthuiastic, energetic and full of life. Control being the operative word. What a very boring world we would have were it not for these "hunter-gatherer" types, described in "You Mean I'm Not Lazy, Stupid or Crazy?" It would be wonderful if teachers--and society for that matter--would look deeper into a child's spirit, in- stead of at their behavior. We are all so label-oriented: if someone deviates at all from the "norm" then there must be a dis-order of some kind. If we could reframe our thinking about ADHD and see that some of the inherent qualities are actually assets, then we could go about truly individualizing our classrooms. All drugs have side effects. Ritalin is in the psychostimulant class along with Methamphetamine and Dextro- amphetamine, street name: SPEED. And as with any drug, there are side effects. The jury is still out as far as the growth issue is concerned. There is a large body of evidence that suggests growth is stunted--that's a pretty major side-effect, one with life-long consequences. Speed speeds up the system, placing stress on the heart and cir- culatory system. Also reported as side effects are disphoria-- which is sadness, anorexia--weight loss is reported in many cases. There is a risk that long-term use is associated with OCD symptoms. Need one go on? And we are dosing our child- ren with this very potent drug. We have to look at a child's spirit, rather than their behavior. Society needs to do the same. We have too long been in- fluenced by the medical profession's "everything is a disease" approach. Education is still a very pedantic system, where kids are still re- quired to be regimented. Allowing free spirits to be just that--free--does not mean that there is a lack of discipline. It means that there is understanding and compassion. The risks of the drug(s), in my opion far outweigh the benefits. So glad to hear of your program!!! Rita Kelley p.s. I found out that ADHD accounted for the many learning problems that I experienced as a child--that was when I was getting my master's in special education. Now, I am receiving my master's in social work where I hope to be able to counsel those with learning disabilities.

At 5 years old our son's teacher suggested, "You might want to consider medication for him." What a shock that was to hear. In 1999 he was diagnoised with a "moderate" case of ADD and I had quite a bit to say about the evaluation. Although developmentally delayed, he was reading at 3 years old. He has been in speech therapy since he was 18th months and occupational therapy for a year. I have seen an improvement in his writing, but he is not a "willing" writer. It takes him what seems like "forever" to write a sentence. He is a "storyteller" and tells wonderful stories that are full of colorful talking characters who express emotions and have exciting action packed adventures. If only he would write these stories that are "in his head"(as he says it)on paper, I know the books would sell. I certainly would buy them. My husband and I refuse to medicate our son because it's not natural and I don't what to loose what's in him that is yet to emerge. I see so much hope in him. We are looking for a natural alternative that will work for him. In his early infancy, he had VSD and at his 8 year old check up last week, a heart murmur was heard. We are not going to put our child's health at risk. I have heard about the music therapy(my son loves music)and have attempted to try it, but have not used it in the regular routine. I'm not even sure I'm using the 60 beats a minute music. Please tell me what will be included in the program other than the music and will I need any training to use the program with my son? I want to place my order as soon as possible. I am so blessed to have come across your site. Thank you for providing and eye-opening alternative. Have you or any of your guest heard of "Writing Without Tears"? Please let me hear from you.

Interesting information!!! Think of all the students with a Special Education label due to ADHD, it boggles the mind. A developmental self-control issue that can be corrected with music and handwriting techniques instead of medication, self-fulfilling prophesies, and the tons of negative self-worth certainly demands investigation.

Just wanted to thank you for all the great info on this site and to say to Cindy, keep hanging in there, keep advocating for you child. My sons have been off all medication for a little over two years, but we would not have gotten there without a great deal of perserverance on our parts, a lot of researching for our selves and many, many conversations with our support group, teachers, therapist and all kinds of doctors. Also, be very diligent on watching for tics in your son with the adderall. Our sons were on it for only a week, but one has had vocal and motor tics as a result, off and on for two years. They were constant and extreme for the first six months, (he was taken off it immediately when he started ticing, but it took this long for the tics to subside). He still tics occasionally, if he is upset or nervous about something and we don't know at this point if he will ever be totally tic free. But my main reason for leaving this message is to encourage you that the no medicine approach does work and to thank you Ms. Farmer for your work and information.

I do believe that ADD disorders are usually suffered by people with highly creative minds that need to channel that energy in a creative way....otherwise it becomes destructive an negative energy as opposed to positive energy. We have all heard of positive thinking and how that can affect our actions and achievements....and I am a firm believer that you can think yourself well as well as to think yourself ill and it is precisely how we deal with situations in life as to how it affects our holistic well-being. I do believe through my own experience that ADD can affect adults as well and that impulsive behaviour is a very common factor in this it is almost like too much nervous energy which needs to be channeled and people with such disorders are very often very clever but indecisive and anxious....but if channeled correctly can be very effective. I do believe that channeled correctly these people are high achievers but if not can be very self destructive and self critical, manic and obsessive. Handwriting or even writing stories is very therapeutic and rewarding too, as you usually find that these kind of people are very imaginative almost over imaginative....you only need to look at famous artists, writers, composers all through history and some of these were seen as mad and a lot suffered very severe bouts of depression also.......but channeled the right way with freedom of expression they were also very productive. I myself am a very impulsive person with a very short attention span, get bored easily, prone to depression, need space to express myself and am also very creative and imaginative and always feel a sense of relaxation when I write or draw. I have two daughters one of 10 and one who is 5, the ten year old is in my opinion very hyperactive and reacts badly to situations outside of her control. She is also very impulsive, creative and also has an over active imagination. I do feel that children today are growing up quicker and have the brain capacity at 10 that in my day we would have been more like 14 or 15, they seem to require more challenging tasks to keep them occupied and sedate their craving for self fulfillment. I also believe that boredom and lack of channelling creative energy leads to petty crimes and worse and the experimentation of drugs. I do believe that creating gives a person a feeling of self worth and pacifies their craving for attention and acknowledgment....I think a lot of problems in society today are inter-related and your hand writing technique is a very good therapy in dealing with the channelling of this potentially destructive energy. The power of the mind is an extremely powerful tool.

So glad to reconnect to you. I began using your materials about 3 years ago after hearing you at the CCIRC conference in Denver. I worked with many student who were having problems in school. By adding this process to the use of Brain Gym, I began to see real changes in the performance of the students. Unfortunately I misplace my tape between Colorado and Florida. Once I get the materials all in order again, I plan to begin using is as part of the developmental program in our Charter School. I truly believe the combinations and connections that are built by these materials plays an important part in working with ADHD students. Thank you for being there when I needed someone to give me some new ideas to use with students. I will keep in touch.

He's never a problem to me, He never has problem in the two daycares that he is in but school I constently calls about his behavior. I ask AEA to be invovled they stated to me he doesn't have ADD. But Therpast that gets more info from school then me wants to drug him as well as school. I am againist this, I get second opinion from someone that works with ADD children state that he has no signs of this either I feel deep down inside that they want to just drug him. I don't know that much about it and I have been trying to find out as much as I can about the drug, it's affects and the pros and cons. I would like it if someone would email me the information that I am looking for as well as websites that contain the information that would help give me knowledge into what it is that I need to make an informed intelligent decision as to what it is that I need to do for my son. thank you for your input on ADD! I am doing a paper for my college course on the pros and cons of ritalin and this site was very informative for me on alternatives to the drug. My younger brother is hyperactive and my daughter has violent anger fits. My brother spent most of his childhood on ritalin, but it is nice to know that, if my daughter's pediatrician recommends the same thing, I can check out this site on different methods of behavioral control.

I have three boys, ages 7,9, and 12. Both of the older boys have been diagnosed as ADHD. Life is not at all like I had dreamed or planned when we began our family. Someone who doesn't live with these children couldn't understand how difficult life can be...Just getting ready to go places takes at least twice as long as other families! Two of the children are on meds, however I am becoming more concerned about the long-term safety of my boys' health and welfare. They currently attend a private school with fairly small student/teacher ratio which is a very positive thing for us. They do get more "attention" than they would in a public school setting. I am interested in getting them off meds, so I welcome more info on your handwriting program.

My 8 year-old son was diagnosed ADHD when he was 3. He took Ritalin for about 3 1/2 years, then we decided to go off the medicin as he is doing pretty good without it, as a matter of fact we agreed to medicate just to go with doctors indications (actually, not to be negligent about the matter but I prefer not to use this kind or medicine in kids)However, to provide him with all the necessary tools to manage himself well in school, we need help with alternatives, please give us more information. Thank You!

I am researching the effects of Ritalin in children. My son has been labeled by his school as having been tested 87% positive for ADHD and I am definitely against the use of the drug associated with this disorder. I ahve found a clinical psychologist, who thank God is as against the use of the drug as I am and hope to put together a program for him once the assessments are done.

This is so refreshing to have more options to help "our" kids! I work in the public school system, and didn't realize all the different learning styles needed for all the "different" children. I also have 3 kids of my own 13,10,8 with my 10 year old having been diagnosed with ADHD in the 1st grade. By 3rd grade, we had him tested for food allergies. WOW! When we found out everything he was sensitive/allergic to...and cleansed him of these foods~The child was as different as night and day. I recommend parents to check out all your options for helping your children learn and grow. I am going to recommend that my school check into WriteBrain, because I could use this in my classroom. I know that I will be getting it for my own kids for our house!

One doctor tells me to give him the meds that way and another says he should keep a certin level of the drug in his system all the time as in Morning-Noon-Evening 7 days a week. My son was born almost three months premature, and he has always been a litte slower than most kids his age. When he started school we were told that he more than likely suffered from ADHD. He is now in first grade and we have taken him to a therapist and he told us that he suffers from ADHD. He wants him to be put on ritalin, but he was on it before and it didn't seem to help. Could there be another diagnosis for him? We have been struggling with this for a long time and I would just like some answers. The therapist said that he would let us know why my son is the way he is, but I still don't understand what is wrong with him.

Our 11 year old foster son was today 'stood down' from school for 2 days, and banned from the school bus for 2 weeks. His social workers suspect he has ADHD, like his older brother. He has some huge emotional issues and lots of anger simmering beneath the surface. Because he has a good IQ and excellent oral skills, we want him to have the best possible opportunities. He naturally 'scribbles, doodles, autographs' everything in sight.....I wonder should we formalise this urge to write, i.e. make it a conscious exercise ??? I would love some ideas, especially given his lack of co-operation about anything that he thinks 'sucks' !!! Cheers from the South Pacific.

I need some help and advice pertaining to my 10 year old adopted son, James. My child several problems prior to birth. His mother used drugs (I'm not sure which drugs were used),while pregnant with him - she also had AIDS. James is having an extremely difficult time academically. His handwriting is illegible, and his reading comprehension - well, he's just not connecting. His math is average. He is not hyper, but he does have problem focusing. He was not functioning in a regular, large class setting. He has just been transferred to a Mis-1 class. I am extremely concerned about him, and I don't believe in medicating as an answer, unless absolutely necessary. I don't know where to turn. I'm not sure if his problem is neurological, emotional, hereditary or a combination of several factors. Where to go from here is my dilema! Should I have him tested extensively at a hopital or other facility? What can I do to motivate him? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you- Wendy

I sent you a fax alst night; as I said, my first letter in some 30 years. I am very interested in developing myhandwriting, which at one time many years ago was very good. You are correct in focusing on handwriting as an important educational tool; at one time in Scotland handwriting was considered of such importance that, in primary school, it was part of the curriculum. Sadly we have gone the same way as the US. I persevere with my writing, forcing myself to endlessly write the alphabet; gradually this routine is improving my pen. However if you have any advice I would be glad to receive it. Saludos, Graeme Borthwick

I have had her tested for allergies and she does have some allergies but none of the ones I have read about in the ADHD research I have done. Please tell me what else I can do. Im running out of options and I really don't like having to give her medicine to contol how she acts. Sincerely, Michelle Williams

I am surfing and needing help. My daughter is 22 years old and diagnosed with adhd in 3 grade. Not wanting to admit needing this drug we struggled through school and life. She was on retilin 9th,10th,11th, and 12th grade and her grades and life improved drastically. Now out on her own she was off retilin for 3 years and has failed in everything she has tried. Her self esteem down she turned to drugs (cocaine) She is now at Ft. Worth Teen Challenge for a year triing to kick her drug habit and get her life together. Teen Challenge is great and she is doing great however they put her back on her retilin so she could succeed the program. They also tried Wellbrutrin for one week which was awful. She couldn't sleep or eat and didn't help with her concentration. So I guess its back to retilin. I am surfing for another way for my daughter to succeed without having to be on retilin the rest of her life. She has lost weight and can't lose any more. She is very smart, I want her to be all she can be and it is imperative that when she leaves Teen Challenge in JUly that she is sussessful. What are the other alternatives? the side effects? What is the answer. Determined to find the best medication or alternative to give my daughter the happy life she deserves. thanks.

He stays alot more focused in school, is more organized, and retains more than the other 2 although I suspect that he is also ADD. Their father is a successful pharmacist, but he has ADD tendencies & I've often wondered if his school hadn't been so structured where he would be today. My boys were not taught printing or cursive writing like we were in the 60's & I do believe that is why their reading comprehension is so terrible. I totally disagree with parents using Ritalin, especially when the child does not agree to taking it as in my brothers case, even his father does not agree and can't do anything about it. I have spoken to many people who have had their children on it and they told me about some of the side effects that it caused like horrable stomach pains. Due to what they told me I find it immoral to use it on a human being.

I was reading through the entries and discovered that I am not the only unique person out there :) I am a 20 year old college student who was recently diagnosed with pretty much ever possible disorder out there, including ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and many others. I am also left-handed which puts me at a disadvantage to the world. i went through high school making straight A's. I graduated at the top of my class. I was tested many times for these disorders. Not a single doctor found them nessessary to diagnose until my college grades started falling well below average. I know this sounds like a sob story, but it's a story that parents of children who are just like me need to read. Don't give up on your children. Yes, they are different and even the most "active" children can make it. I am now a college student who is on the way to the deans list and working on a degree in criminal justice with a minor in psychology (with a specialization on childhood disorders). please email me if you have any questions about any of the disorders...and one favor i ask of all-PLEASE DON"T LET DOCTORS TELL YOU YOUR CHILD HAS A DISEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks.

This is completely immoral, and irresponsible. I feel so badly for the children who are drugged into conformity by their lazy parents who do not want to deal with them.

Now he is subject to the "system" to keep him advancing. I feel strongly other things can be done. This has brought me to your site. I will be researching more. Hopefully, can inform you of our advancements.

I TOO HAVE VERY MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT AD/ADHD...I KNOW THAT WE AS A SOCIETY HAVE MADE MORE AND MORE DEMANDS ON OUR CHILDREN, WHAT WITH SEGA AND 10 SECOND "BITS" EVEN ON SESEME STREET...IT IS NO WONDER THAT OUR CHILDREN ARE BUCKLEING UNDER THE STRESS. BUT I ALSO BELEIVE THAT THERE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ADD/ADHD CHILDREN (ALTHOUGH THEY HAD NO OFFICIAL TITLE) THAT WERE THE BULLIES, THE KIDS CONSTANTLY SENT TO "THE OFFICE", THE ONES THAT COULD NEVER WAIT, OR WHATEVER THE SITUATION THEY ALWAYS SAID THE WRONG THING...SO WHAT DO YOU DO? MY SON IS 7--HE HAD AD/ADHD SYMPTOMS IN THE HOSPITAL!! UNTIL RECENTLY I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN ACTIVITES AFTER 3 PM DUE TO HIS BEHAVIOR...I ONCE HAD A DOCTOR (MINE, I HAD TO TAKE MY SONE WITH ME) WHO SAID I WAS A "BAD MOTHER" BECAUSE I COULDN'T KEEP HIM UNDER CONTROL. I HAVE AN EDUCATION DEGREE AND MANY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WITH "AT-RISK YOUTH"...I KNOW ABOUT REDIRECTION AND BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION. MY SON'S TEACHER CALLED ME @X..MAYBE NOT. THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME "VENT"...

Hello, my husband and I are the proud parents of three wonderful African American young men. Early in their education they were all diagnosed with ADHD. My oldest and youngest are very hyper and my middle is not, but they all have issues with organizational skills, following more than one direction at a time, finishing what they start, paying attention in class and even at home. They are all very bright children and could possibly be "A, B and C" students if what, (they tried harder, mom stop "carrying" them(checking up on them with their teachers and asking about homework 181 days of the school year), they wanted these grades for themselves and not just to keep mom from being on their backs, I do not know. They all have been tested through the school system and were found to have ADHD. But, is it likely that ALL three of them would have it? I am having the youngest one tested again. All of their handwriting is horrible! The oldest and youngest want to print everything. We want to do all we can to help our young men be able to compete in this jungle of a world we live in, but it is hard when they fight you every step of the way. We tell them even if you work at McDonalds you still must be able to count. I did not mean to take up all of your time, but when I saw another avenue for me to go to for possible assistance I took it. My husband and I work full-time, go to school full-time and we still give time to them but they just do not seem to want to or even care to understand all we do is for our and their overall welfare. We want to make a better life for us all. We thought that if they see us working hard and going to school it would motivate them, well I am not so sure. Thank you, M. Kimmie

My son is in the process of being evaluated by his school. They have asked me to take him to a doctor. They think he might be ADHD. They also told me that he has trouble with his handwriting skills. Needless to say, I almost feel over after reading the about the connection between handwriting and ADHD. I'm going to order the CD. I'll let you know how it works.

I have been concerned recently to learn that my grandson (7) has been labelled with a new social disease called ADD. I believe that this "label" has been attached to him and many other children simply because they are unique and different and somehow do not conform to the requirements of the teaching proffession. i.e they will not pay attention they do not listen to what I am saying ,they wriggle and squirm. Perhaps if I was subjected to the "modern"ways of teaching, I too would become bored and disinterested.

I also think it's over prescribed, and there are other alternatives that work just as well as Ritalin.

WOW! I was very happy to find this website! My husband and I have a child with ADHD, ODD and PDDNOS, we have fought medicating him for the past two years. We feel that the more we educate oursevles about the "diagnosis", the better we can help our son. The question is, "Is this a heridetary disease?" as my step-son, my husbands oldest son who is 7, soon to be 8 has also been diagnosed as ADHD, ODD. We feel he is not so lucky as his mother medicates him..with the big "R", Ritalin. I suppose in some ways it is warranted, in other ways it is not. Does Ritalin cause long term cardiovascular and central nervouse system damage? If you go to WWW.Salon.Com Mothers Who Think, there are many articles about this issue. My husband and I feel that the more you practice behavior modification and keep the children involved in the right programs, school, therapy, etc...medication is unnecessary. This program of "retraining the brain" is an excellent idea. It is a therapy that in more ways than one can help these "special Children" from falling into the pharmacutical cracks of todays society. I welcome your comments and suggestions, please feel free to write! I am sure we can all relate in one way or another!

My son suffered from Hyperactivity when he was four years old. We noticed the symptoms appeared within an hour of him consuming food or drink that contained additives such as artificial colourings, mono sodium glutamate and sodium benzoate. The answer to the problem was a to ensure his diet was free from these additives. I wonder how many children are being prescribed Ritalin for their hyperactivity when all they need is an additive free diet.

October 26, 2000 Wow, this is a very interesting concept. I have a child who is LD/Gifted. During a short time in his grade one experience I homeschooled him. I am a vocalist and music lover, and during the time I educated my son at home, one of the techniques I used was music during his handwriting segments. As he/I formed the letters we used musical notes suited to their shapes. I found this to be tremendously helpful to him. It was not something that I knew or had read about, but rather something that I felt drawn to try. I have also used rhymical patterns to improve memory, ie. spelling words, and times tables. My sense is that there definitely is a strong link between music and learning. It's often been said that music is the unniversal language, and I have found music to be such a healing and enjoyable medium to enhance learning. I am interested in leaning more about your theory. I agree with your statement about ritalin, and I don't see it as a solution. Thank you for this valuable information, and I would love to learn more about it. I can't afford the tapes right now, but will look into this when I can. Sincerely, Leanna Martinez Toronto, Canada

Your website is a breath of fresh air. I am doing post-doctoral work at a major university in psychology, and they are still telling us that there is no alternative to using drugs on our children. I want to write a major article stressing the fact that lead poisoning is a major cause of the problems of many of our youth who are being drugged up and possibly mis-diagnosed. Does anyone out there have leads to studies to support my research?

I am very interested in what I have read so far and will probably give your method a try. I noticed last that when he turned on his little radio and there was nice soft background music playing, he was far more attentive to the story we were reading. I will try it again tonight as he does his homework. Gosh I'm going to try it with all 4 of my children, 5th grade, 7th grade and 12th grade who seem to be over-awed by there homework.

I can understand the music relationaship, as I am a musician and a writer, nothing published yet....We a special ed teacher that would put classical music on the tape recorder and my eldest would do math (yuck) for the required amount of time. Is this how your program works? Anyway, anything you can do to help would be appreciated. As they say, a child has a certain window of time before it gets harder to reteach him. Mine are 11 and 12. At this time everyone involved feels like although he definetly needs the rythmic writing therapy enrolling him in the school is not the right thing for him at this time. My daughter is 10 years old and was diagnosed with ADD two years ago. We have tried several medications and now have her on Ritalin and Zoloft. She is not hyperactive in school, but is hyperactive at home. During school she appears to be concentrating, but often cannot repeat tasks or complete tasks. She has been tested twice for learning disabilities, but has been found to have none, but still has problems retaining math and language arts. According to her teachers, she is the "classic" teacher pleaser during class, but has problems adjusting to her siblings and home atmosphere. Her teachers all seem to be "stumped" and we have struggled on keeping her success up in school. The Ritalin seems to have helped some, but I have not noticed a major improvement. This all started in 1st grade and she is now in the 5th grade and I am becoming increasingly worried, since she is heading for middle school. I think I need to explore some other possibilities. I would greatly welcome suggestions.

Thank you, Jeanette for your great insight! I am a mental health advocate, 67 years young. Nearly forty years ago, I was hospitalized and received electro shock therapy that wiped out my academic memory, such as, shorthand, etc., which is also learned by using the hand to do memory recall and gain shorthand skills. Through the help of a therapist I learned various techniques for relearning shorthand and memory recall. It was through repetitious practice, using 'writing' to commit to memory that aided me in recovering from the brain damages from electro shock therapy. Your advice for teaching children is exactly the same as my therapist, years ago, taught me (to offset memory loss due to ECT and psychotropic drugs. I am now a zealous advocate against SUCH BANAL PSYCHIATRIC PRACTICES, KNOWING that the Ritalin/Prozac craze is doing much damage to the lives of the nation's young children.

We have a 8-year-old boy that was just dx with dysgraphia. We are trying to learn more about the causes of dysgraphia. I have read many articles telling me what the symptoms are are what to look for--but I can not find any clinical research stating what the theories are on the cause of dysgraphia--is it a nuerological problem? The psychologist stated it was a central nervous system disorder--but how exactly does it work and how does your system (retraining the brain) impact students with dysgraphia?

Jeanette, I am doing a report, for Psychology, on the alternatives of using drugs to "control" kids with ADHD. I was wondering what you meant when you said ADHD is a fad. Are there examples in history of parents using drugs on their children so that they can relax when they get home? Or am I looking at this the wrong way? I would have been a child that was branded with ADHD, if it weren't for a loving mother that put her "needs" on the back burner while she raised her children. I work in an elementary school and everyday I hear teachers saying that so-in-so is on Ritalin. In my experience, most of the children fall into two categories. The first, being from a family where there is not much support at home for the the child. The second, being from a family where both of the parents work outside of the home. So my ultimate question is, has Ritalin, or other "personality supressing" drugs, become the modern mom? Has their been any research in this area or is it too politically incorrect to study the effects of motherless children? I'm sorry if I sound condescending, that is not my objective. I really am concerned for the future of kids, and I'm just wondering if there is any truth to my observations.

One question I do have is: if she orders this product, how would she get her boy to actually take interest in it? Please send whatever addtional information you might have to this address. It's wonderful that you've found another solution to Ritalin!!! The thing is what if there is no such thing as A.D.D.? There is no scientific proof of it . Although there is proof of A.D.H.D.(Chemical imbalance in the brain), how can we be sure children have a learning disability? Besides what are the "Causes" of ADD?

My son was diagnosed with severe ADHD some 20 years ago. Much to my objection, he was placed on Ritalin. I followed Dr. Feingold's diet for hyperactive children and within 3 months we weaned him off of Ritalin. He has not been on it since and is now 24 years old. I did, however, have to homeschool him because of his "Learning Disabilities." After 10 years of homeschooling, we put him back in the public school so he could earn a college scholarship in basketball. Instead he earned a full 2 year scholarship in Academics and graduated the Most Outstanding Senior in the whole county! This was all accomplished without Ritalin! And we were dealing not only with ADHD, but LD as well! So, to all of you parents out there struggling with these problems now, THERE IS HOPE! My son is a living example of that. He has a 3.45 GPA in college, holds down a full-time job as an assistant manager of a retail store & has his own computer business. He's very intelligent, fun-loving, and successful. I just wish we had known about this writing program back then, as I'm sure it would have helped him. He still has very poor handwriting! God bless all of you struggling with ADHD and LD children! I now teach kids with these problems and plan to look more into this handwritng technique!

I agree with your assessment regarding handwriting. My daughter, now 14, has been diagnosed as ADD and has been on ritalin. My feeling was and is that the ritalin did absolutely nothing to help her with her difficulties. One doctor diagnosed dysgraphia and my daughter has great motor skill difficulties. In our school district, handwriting is only taught until the 3rd grade. I have been searching for help. I am considering your system as it seems to make sense to me and directly relates to my daughter's particular problems.

I have heard the word medication on several occasions. I have done research on Ritalin, Adderall and other stimulants and do not like what I have found. I have been reading some of Dr. Peter Breggin's work and its very interesting reading! I would appreciate any information any one can send me on behavioral management and ritalin alternatives. There must be a better way! Educate don't medicate!! FYI..90% of the ritalin manufactured in the world is consumed by the United States!! Pretty scary!

I have a 6 1/2 daughter who has been on ritalin for almost a year. And before it she could'nt sit still in kindergarten long enough to learn. Her father is very adhd, but she lives and has been mostly raised by me. They say its inherited but I'm not sure if thats possible. She had never even colored a full picture untill ritalin. One question that I never get a straight answer on is does ritalin stunt your growth? She was already short and underweight before since she is 6 37#s and 41in. She also has h-pylori ulcers. But I started looking online because I'm tired of all the comments I get from my relatives. And I was looking for some positive facts to use for comebacks but so far haven't come across any. I realized that I really didn't really know that much about what I was giving my daughter. But she is on medicaid and they don't pay for alternatives. And the ritalin works now but what about later? They say she will grow out of it.

Hello! I am a single mom, part-time college student and full-time medical receptionist/medical assistant. I am currently working towards my R.N. degree. I have an 8 year old daughter who was diagnosed with A.D.D. just last Monday (3-6-00). She was put on a small dose of Ritalin twice a day and I have seen a major improvement at home and her teacher, after the first day of medication sent a note home stating "she is a new child, che functioned completely, WHAT A BLESSING!" I am always on the internet trying to find alternatives to medication as she hates to swallow pills, no matter how small they are. She says she can tell a major difference with her attitude and her concentration skills since being put on medication. We have been through a lot and am currently getting ready to move when this school year is over. I would really like to order your tapes and lessons. I will discuss this with my mom, as she is a constant support to me and my daughter and helps with the rearing of my daughter. She is also a 2nd-3rd grade teacher and she may be willing to try this in her class and pay for it. It wouldn't hurt her to try. She will want more information so, I will have her visit this site and share the information with my daughters teacher, as they are at the same school this year. Thank you for your exhaustive time and research spent on this subject. I am totally excited and willing to try anything. Thanks AGAIN!!!

What a pleasure it was to find this sight. I am a parent of at least one child who has been labelled 'mild ADD' with dysgraphia. As a teacher, I was at a loss with my own children and with students who would hold pencils in contorted ways and who would insist on printing in grade 8.This included gifted students. Is it important HOW you hold your pencil, the angle with which you write, and the path you take to creating a letter? Other teachers don't care and my kids think i'm a nut case. I have been greatly disappointed with what is happening in regards to writing in the schools. It seemed that other professionals were mostly not concerned. I even believed the psychologists who tested my son and told me to concentrate on keyboarding skills because the writing "would just not happen". Well, a private school put him in the position to practice writing and I did see it happen - although he always seemed to need extra time. I would like to try out your program, first, on my daughter and my son. Then I will take it into the classroom situation. If it works, you can be sure the word will spread because I also plan to teach some Special Education courses to teachers at the university level. Please send me a bibliography of reading materials on this subject if this is possible. I am also hoping that this will effect my son's reading.I anticipate having positive results to report to you. Kind regards, Genya Masri

May I add my observations? I have a job that is highly political, running Special Events for politicians. This takes lots of time away from my wife & 3 kids. I have seen that when I spend more time with them, some of the kids' disorders improve (stammering, inattentiveness, great activity). The doctors are recommending Ritalin. I so far have resisted it. I am on the verge of accepting the medication, but there is this nagging muse suggesting to me that if I were doing things right, then no drugs might be needed. Any comments would be insightful and appreciated.

SINCE THEN WE HAVE TIGHTENED OUR REINS AND HAVE HAD GOOD LUCK RESPONSE BUT WITH MUCH CONFLICT WITH THE SCHOOL AS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE NEW TEACHER THIS YEAR, THIS HAS CONVINCED US THAT WE ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK BUT IN THE LAST MONTH WE HAVE RAN INTO A CONCRETE WALL AND THAT IS WHY WE ARE LOOKING AT YOU FOR THE NEXT STEP. WE ARE BOTH VERY FAMILIAR WITH LEARNING PROBLEMS AS WE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS OURSELFS,AND SEE OUR DAUGHTER IN OUR SELFS, CURRENTLY I'M SELF EMPLOYED AND MY WIFE RUNS AN OFFICE, WE ARE DOING FINE BUT ARE AT A LOSS AS WHAT TO DUE FOR OUR DAUGHTER, WE WIIL REMAIN DRUG FREE AND TRY ANY OTHER WAY AND HOPE WE CAN HOLD OUR HEADS UP HIGH IN THE LONG RUN. I teach in a resource room. I have had many students that were diagnosed ADHD.Those that were on adderall seemed to function better than those on ritalin.I'd prefer that they didn't have to take anything. I'm really interested in your writing method and music tapes. There seems to be a push in lower grades not to teach cursive handwriting at our school. My students are fourth-fifth grade level. I would like to see a sample lesson, template, or music tape selection if possible. Any inservices offered in Michigan? Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you.

I would like to know if your program could help my 18 & 19 yr old son & daughter? They were both diagnosed with adhd in 1st & 4th grade respectively. My husband has never been tested but he also is suspected of being adhd also. Our 16 yr old has to be pushed constantly & watched over to be made to do it,yet she is very intelligent & can do work easily when wants to. We also have a left-handed 5 yr old daughter who has just started pre-k & is exibiting some small signs of adhd. Will your program work on a lefty? I would like more info on your program &/or a sample if this is possible. My husband is now disabled with short time to live & I would like to know if you have a payment plan &/or money back guarantee. I appreciate your time & Thank God for you and your research.

I am doing a research paper on the dangers of Ritalin, and how ADHD can be misdiagnosed. I've been looking for alternatives to mind altering drugs prescribed to children to counteract the symptoms of ADHD. Most of the books I've read in the library praise and promote Ritalin as if it were some miracle drug, regardless of the fact that it is no different than giving your child cocaine regularly. Thank you for broadening my thinking to hopeful cures of this disorder.

I have a five year son who was diagnosed with ADHD two years ago. We have chosen drug therapy temporarly to help get it under control. We have seen how much behavoral and sensory techniques have helped him, but so far it has not been enough. He currently goes to a montessori. Your program makes total sense to us. Would we beable to suplement his school work at home with it? We feel we would need more information to order your program.

My 6 year old son has been having some difficulties as of late focusing in school. I just got a very frustrated note from the teacher today stating that unless she was standing over him, he would not/could not get anything finished. He is kept out of music/p.e. to finish work and has even stayed in from recess. No one has mentioned ADD to us, however after researching things this afternoon, and reading the other posts here, I have to wonder. He does have trouble falling asleep and staying focused on tasks is somewhat difficult unless he is interested in whatever it is. Any further information you can send to us about your program would be greatly appreciated. I am very interested, but would like to know more before we ordered the program. Thank you.

I am a newly trained graphologist by Sister June Canoles, SND, and a former classroom teacher of over 30 years. I could not agree more with your research and the form of therapy you provide. Sadly, however, handwriting or penmanship, as it was once identified on our report cards, is longer a part of the elementary school curriculum: no time; not necessary; most kids prefer to print; kids are using computers. These are some of the reasons we no longer have such training in the classroom. We are doing a major disservice to these children. How can we therefore, make the schools and those in charge of devising the curriculum realize that this is an integral part of the growing process, ADDH, learning disabled, or otherwise?

He is a very intelligent child(he already reads many simple words) but lacks focus on activities that do not interest him and self control when it comes to things he feels strongly about. We do not feel that medication is needed except in extreme cases. Our child is not an extreme case, we have done wonders with behavioral therapy and would just like for him to suceed in school.

Definitely interested in Volume I. My 6 yr old was recently diagnosed with some of the symptoms of A.D.D., My husband & I do not want to put her on Ritalin. She is not hyperactive, but has difficulty with attention & focus. When we took her in for the doctor to evaluate her, they stated that her vision was not 20/20 and to have it checked by an eye doctor. So we may find out that part of the problem is from not having proper vision. The other factor is that her birthday falls at the end of August. She may not be ready yet to meet the standards that are required. I think that anyone who finds out that there child has symptoms of A.D.D., should always check out all the possiblities before ever Putting there child on Ritalin. Thank you.

He's in his 2nd year of Kindergarten due to a summer birthday, and finding out at the age of 4 that he had very little vision. Most of what I've found in reading is that he may be borderline (if there is such a thing) ADD. I really do not want to go the route of medication. Any alternatives would be very helpful.

Iam curious about your theory that writing is the key for learning. I have an eleven year son who is very bright. He has had quit a bit of difficulty learning to read. He has finally been successful since he has been tutored using the Lindamood method. He still has considerable difficulty getting his thoughts on paper. He is extremely verbal. I wonder if your writing training would help speed up his mechanics and then perhaps help his flow from his brain onto the paper. I homeschooled him last year and also this year. I would like to put him back in school for 7th grade, but he must improve his ability to get things down on paper. If you have sample lessons I would be very interested in trying your method. I am very concerned about my 11 year old daughter. She will be 12 May 1, 2000. She was diagnosed with ADHD the last 6 weeks of kindergarden. This was after me fighting all year with the public school system concerning her unattentiveness. I finally gave in and asked her primary Physician to refer her to someone that specialized in ADD/ADHD. After complete evaluation they confirmed that she did have ADHD. She has been treated since then. The first treatment of course was ritalin. This did help signficantly, although I did not like the side effects of highs and lows when coming down off the drug. I only gave it to her on school days. Otherwise I coped with her behavior, attitude, defiancy, unattentiveness. It has been a constant srtuggle to help her keep up in school. She can do the work if it is of interest to her. The only Grade she excelled in was the Fourth as the teacher gave her the attention she needed. Therefore I know she can do the work if only given the resources needed to keep her attentive and build her esteem in lieu of consistent put downs by the public school system as they look at her disability as a behavior problem not a mental disability. I now have her seeing a counselor once a week and she has just had a complete phsycological evaluation which I will receive the results January 6. I feel as I am reaching the end of my rope. It scares me as she is very disrespectful to anyone in an authority. She has no fear of consequences of her actions. She does know right from wrong, although if she choses to do something she has been told not to do she will do it willing taking whatever consequnces comes with it. She is 4 foot tall and weighs 50 pounds, very petite and very cute. She has not yet got involved in drugs, sex, or viloent behavior. I am about the only one she has any respect for. Although she is very argumentive with me when trying to get her way with things such as wearing makeup, dressing unappropriate for school, taking trinkets or things to school which cause her distractions, etc. Nothing major as of yet. I could go on forever but I'll close. Any reading or resources you could refer for me to read would be appreciated. I am limited on finances as I am now a single parent since September of 99 and I am having difficulties as it is paying for counselors and physcologist. She has been in a research program for a year for a new drug called ORSO. It is a time released form of ritalin. I would like very much to get her completely off of drug treatment. Thanking you in advance for any advice you can provide.

Our 8-year-old son has been diagnosed with ADHD and a learning disability, though the school district will not get more specific than that. He's very bright, tested at 120 IQ, and is a whiz at math and anything he's interested in learning verbally. He's behind in reading though making great strides through lots of individual attention from me as well as his special ed teacher. His handwriting is very immature and he hates to write anything. Was never interested in coloring books though he's just started getting a little interested in them. Would like to know more specifics about your program. Do I need to contact you another way for you to mail me info., or what? We've tried visual therapy and it was a disaster; he fought with the teacher the whole time. We're understandably gun-shy about trying a new program, but I'd sure like to know more about it. Thanks!

Do you know of any theories with regard to training other areas of the brain to do what the area that was removed would have been doing?

Dear Jeanette: I was searching for information on the functions of the brain and came to your webpage. I read all of the articles you had listed and agreed with all. Let me explain. I have a 16 year old daughter that was diagnosed ADHD when she was in the six grade. She was put on a small dosage of Ritalin and as the years progressed the doctor increased the dosage with the time released. She was on 20 TR plus a 5 ml in the morning, 10 ml at Noon and 20 ml at night. Her behavior was getting progresively worst. Even though she did better in school; her self steam was down and her behavior did not improve. Everytime I took her to the Pediatrician he said that she was a teenager with ADHD. I did not believe him and told him that it was not normal for my daughter to be on Ritalin. That the Ritalin was not helping. She is now a Junior and finally I admitted her to the Psych Unit at the Hospital. While there I requested all the neurological exams there are in the market. Well, the tests revealed that my daughter had a malformation of the cerebelum and she was missing the corpus collosum. All of these years that she was on Ritalin and our trials and tribulations of pain were in vain. Also, my dauther has been having minor seasures which had nothing to do with ADHD. What had save her is the fact that for the time that she could walk we had it on dancing lessons. First tap and ballett and then tap. While in HS we put her in every sport she wanted to try. Amasingly enough she liked track and tennis. We also gave her a lot of books for coloring and writing. She loves to still do these things. The teachers said that the only thing Natasha likes to do is write. She hated to read. If it wasn't for her dancing lessons, her writing, and her sports - I do not know where she would be now. We have a long ways to go but with the love of our God we will succeed. I would like to tell other parents to have their children check with a neurologist before they put them on Ritalin. Ritalin is not the answer. Exercise, dancing, writing and running, all help. What a pleasure it is to see that I am not the only one with problems. There is a good God helping all of us with childrens with need.

Alot of the information I've been reading is geared to young children. I have a 16 yr. old that has add/adhd,compared to others, not so bad. But enough to make her feel low-esteem & confidence in school. Private school from k-8.I always asked if they thought she had add. They were not, obviously, knowlegeable about this area. She went for extra help through the school district. Hated tasks given to her, but did it. She was diagnosed in 9th grade because I decided I needed to know. Now so much time has passed. Although everyone loves Brianne, Brianne lacks confidence and has basically given up on education. Hates school, peers her age. Socially she has always been an E+++.Stick her in a room with a negative and a positive, she wil come out with a positive. She would meet you for the first time and come home and tell me everything about you in such a gifted way. She'd make a great teacher for children or a social worker, but she needs an education under her belt. Now in 11th grade the cutting classes has somewhat lightened. She is in a Bosces Tech School as well. Does wonderful, when she goes. It started first for culinary, she dropped it, cosmotology & nails. Dropped the cosmotology & is now doing just the nail part. She won't attempt the hShe ard work. Her IQ is 115. She fails because she cuts. After reading article on the handwriting, I know what you mean. Brianne up to 5th grade had a beautiful handwriting, after that is was HORRIBLE! I don't understand. This is the first time in a couple of months that I hvae seen an improvement in handwriting, and a little more focus. Not sure if it's because she's now realizing hs is coming to an end next year???I can't give up on her. Many things have been done for her through the school. They even offered to place her in an alternative program out of school district. I did not want to put her in a school with kids of emotional & drug problems. She refused to take Speech & Language. She's in resource room. How do I get this kid back on track? She only has 2 credits. Believe it or not I spent $700 for a private school for her to pass English and Gloval Studies, and she did it. When she was done with the course, over the summer, she actually felt bored. The structure was there. She needs that. Public schools have freedom that private schools don't. I went ot public school myself, so I'm not knocking it. It's just that you are being treated like a responsible person and you are supposed to perform, this is not a good program for Brianne. Yet she had a hard time and was ridiculed, terribly by a couple of horrible teachers, especially in Math, the teacher made fun of the "not so smart" kids, not too cruel, huh!, so we did not make her go to a Catholic H.S. I believe this was a big mistake, but she begged us no to make her go. We would never force her. But they had the structure she needed. We learn from our mistakes. I need to get her back on track. I hope I haven't wasted you time if you cannot help. But we feel desperate here. And the sad part is Brianne is a great person. Just not a good student.Any suggestions?

Hello,I am very interested in this website, as the idea of Handwriting Training seems to corralate with some of the ideas and techniques used by Milton Erickson, that also led to vast improvement in grades. When I learn more about them, may I use your ideas in the Child Partial Hospital where I am a psychotherapist, and in my private practice? Thanks.Diane

My son is in 4th Grade (9yrs old) and has not been formerly diagnoised w/ADD(inattentive) even though we started the diagnoistic process. We have had the samecomments since 1st grade from 3 different teachers in3 schools. I don't believe in medications so we haveworked on positive reinforcement, timers, simple instructions(then have Evan repeat these instructions), used incentives such as tokens (for playtime or tv time), treatsor money. I have reached the point where the therapistindicated I've done all that I could sans medication. Thedoctor now wants to start medication. We no longer see thisdoctor or therapist. I look forward to trying this handwriting method. The firststep will be a baseline w/handwriting and current behaviors documented, then evaluate/monitor each month.

My daughter Tiffany is 13 years old. She is in the 7th grade in public school. We held her back a year before she started kindergarten because her preschool teacher told us she was developmentally delayed. She has been diagnosed with ADD/non-hyperactive complicated by depression. She received help through an IEP at her school until the end of the 5th grade. She was receiving occupational therapy help because she has motor skills processing delays. Her handwriting is ATROCIOUS and part of her occupational therapy was working on her cursive. All through elementary school, they brushed it off and said not to worry about her handwriting because of - you guessed it - computers. Now that she's in middle school, her teachers are screaming because they can't read her handwriting. I'm at wits end.

Am very interested in your program. My son is 7 and did a 3-6 yr Montessori program and did so well. The Montessori teachers say he is gifted and in the 140-150 IQ range. He has been in public school for 1st grade and 1qt of 2nd grade his teacher asked that we test him for add/adhd/ His Dr. doesn't think he has ADD and does not want him on medication neither do we. He is not progressing in public school at a rate consistent with his intelligence. We have been doing the exercises from the Handle Institue in Seattle(Handle.org). His naturopath has put him on supplements to help him increas absorbtion of certain minerals. I need to try these things for at least a month, but would be very interested in your program and plan on telling my Montessori teacher about you. I feel as though I keep trying different programs and it's hard to know which one works. The Handle says Ian is hyper-senstivie in all 5 senses. Please let me know what you think. He's a great kid who can't control his behavior most of the time.Did ok in Montessori school.Shelle

Please help me and my son. He is 8 1/2 and in third grade. I have read alot about ADD/ADHD. I have tried several ways of helping him control his behavior but non of it are fully successful. I've been told he is a very smart kid and finishes his work on time but disturbs other kids after. My question is how can I improve is "memory" to keep focused and not to be repeatedly reminded of being told about his bad behaviors. Thank you for your time.Erlinda

I'm a third grade teacher in California. ALL of my boys and two of my girls have visual perception problems. Almost all of the boys have fine motor problems. Five have been identified with "ADHD." My questions are: Do you have any seminars in the Sacramento area, and if I were to purchase your program, would I begin with K-2 program, or start with the subsequent program? HELP! I've taught for about 25 years, and children seem to be having more "problems" (especially visual- SCREENS!!!!!!!! ) than ever before.THANKS, ALAN! YOTEACHO@Xcom

My needs lie in the area of mature adults. An ADD newsletter led me to your site which led to the following question:Does Volume II (for grades 3-12) only work for children in grades 3-12 or can it work just as effectively for adults well beyond the school age years (specifically at least 15 years after the brain has physiologically matured)?Regards,Alex

I have read so much about this drug , I really do not know what to do.Grand-pa said we better never put her on ritlan, he was really strong willed about this, he would be really mad if he found out that the doctor wants her on this, maybe to the point that he may never speek to me again. I have some questions about your program, although I am very interested and optomistic about it. My son is 7 1/2 years old, in 3rd grade, has been "diagnosed" with ADHD, prescribed with Ritalin (took it for 2 1/2 months atthe end of 2nd grade) now trying Adderall, has tested with an overall IQ of 140 on the WISC-R test ( 150 in the verbal). I hate medicating him! But, his teachers complain about his ditracting classroom behavior. He fidgets, squirms, plays with supplies, and talks to classmates. He also has problems focusing in class and completing assignments. With the Ritalin he improved greatly, but I didnt like the side effects (weight loss, irritability, etc.)I'm not yet sure about the Adderall. With that brief background, here are my questions: My son is left handed, how does that affect the training? How long does it take for improvements to be noticed? Do you reccommend continuingmedication during the retraining process? I'm sure I will think of more questions in the future, but answers to these will greatly help. I am especially concerned about the factor of left-handedness and how it relates to all of this. thank you so much for your time and information.Sincerely,Carol Sherry
